Dr. Charles Latham

Dr. Charles Latham treated the people of Sandbach from his surgery at West View (on the corner of Belle Vue Terrace and Crewe Road). The doctor was immensely popular and so loved locally that the people of Sandbach erected a statue to commemorate his blameless life, devoted to the service of his fellow people. The memorial was initially placed outside the Town Hall, was moved to Sandbach Park and has most recently been relocated to a more appropriate position outside Ashfields Medical Centre. Its inscription reads: “He was Beloved of all, a friend of the poor.”

Sir George Gilbert Scott

The celebrated architect Sir George Gilbert Scott was commissioned by John Armitstead, vicar of Sandbach, to design a number of buildings in the town, including Sandbach School, Sandbach Literary Institution, the Almshouses, St. John’s Church Sandbach Heath and the vicarage (now Tall Chimneys at Betchton). Chiefly associated with the design and renovation of churches, cathedrals and workhouses, he was one of the most prolific architects Britain has ever produced. Most notably he designed and built the Albert Memorial for Queen Victoria and the Midland Hotel at St. Pancras Station. He also oversaw renovations at Westminster Abbey and was buried there in 1878.
